Today (June 20, 2018), At the AWS Public Sector Summit in Washington DC, VMware announced VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud. This offering will bring the ease, simplicity, and agility of moving to the cloud to those running workloads in GovCloud. VMware Cloud on AWS Govcloud operates similar to our regular VMware Cloud on AWS offering, however, GovCloud being designed to allow U.S. government agencies and customers to run their sensitive workloads requires stricter regulatory and compliance requirements.
VMware Cloud on AWS Govcloud meets the GovCloud requirements and continues to give customers the ability to migrate their workloads easier and quicker with less operational overhead, integrate with AWS services, and modernize applications at their pace.
For those who have not kept up as much on the VMware Cloud on AWS offering, it is a joint offering between both VMware and AWS to provide customers with a true hybrid cloud. VMware offers this as a service, providing customers with the hardware, software (VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter Server, NSX, Hybrid Cloud Extension (HCX), and vSAN in the base offering, Site Recovery (DR) as an add-on), and support. VMware provides all maintenance, patching, and support of this offering, allowing customers to focus on running their workloads, rather than managing and maintaining the infrastructure.
Customers are able to deploy Software-Defined Data Centers (SDDCs) on-demand and in the region they require (currently in Oregon, Northern Virginia, London, and Frankfurt, with Syndey and Japan being announced but not yet available at the time of writing)
Because of the way this offering is architected, customers are able to natively access AWS services from their vSphere VMs, allowing for even greater flexibility and integrations between the best of both VMware products and AWS services.
