It’s official! I’m excited to announce that VMware Cloud on AWS now has an easier way for you to quickly deploy and use our service. We are now offering 1-node/1-host Software-Defined Data Centers (SDDC’s) for customers to be able to quickly and easily try out this offering. By deploying a 1-node SDDC, you will be able to test out the features and functionality of VMware Cloud on AWS at a fraction of the cost. These 1-node SDDC’s are fully self-service, paid for by credit card (or HPP/SPP credits), and deployed in just under two hours.

1-Node allows you to take advantage of:

  • Hybrid Linked Mode – Single pane of glass management of on-premises and cloud resources
  • Migrations between On-Prem and Cloud
  • Hybrid Cloud Extension (HCX)
  • All-Flash vSAN Storage* (There is no redundancy in a 1-node offering)
  • NSX Networking as well as Layers 2 and 3 VPN

1-Node will not allow you to take advantage of:

  • vMotion between hosts in cluster (it’s a single node, no other hosts to vMotion between)
  • vSphere HA (once again, single node won’t fail over to a non-existant host)
  • vSphere DRS (same reasons as the two previous)

What you get

This offering gives you a 30-day single-host SDDC. There is a banner in the console that will keep you informed of how much time your SDDC has left. The SDDC is deployed just like a 4-node SDDC, just with less hosts (same number of management VMs), giving you the ability to test VMware Cloud on AWS and its features, with your specific use-cases. VMware Cloud on AWS includes:

  • (1) physical host with (2)18-core processors (36 cores, 72 hyper-threads), 512GB RAM, 10.7 raw NVMe
  • Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) with NSX, vSAN, and vSphere
  • Hybrid Cloud Extension (HCX)
  • Hybrid Linked Mode
  • Native Integration with AWS Services
  • Integrated Access to Developer Center and API Explorer
  • VMware Site Recovery (additional costs apply)

You may deploy additional SDDC’s at the end of the 30-day countdown for the initial SDDC. However, all one-node offerings are currently set to expire at the end of the 30 days for lifecycle and security purposes. These are meant to allow you to quickly trial the offering, test integrations, and take advantage of the cloud integrations we have with AWS Services.

 

Getting Started

Go to https://cloud.vmware.com/vmc-aws/single-host-access to fill out the service form. You will be asked to create an account:

Next, you will need to enter payment information. You will not be charged until you deploy an SDDC.

Once you’ve filled out your account information, you will receive confirmation on the webpage as well as by email. The confirmation will allow you to login and create a Cloud Services ‘Organization’, essentially a logical construct for you to add additional users, permissions, and services to.

 

Once you’ve created your organization, you can go ahead and deploy your SDDC. At this stage, you should have an AWS account with a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) configured to connect to your SDDC.

 

Creating your SDDC is simple and straight-forward. Select the AWS region where the SDDC will deploy, and give the SDDC a name.

 

Once the SDDC Properties have been added, you will connect your AWS account using the quickstart instructions shown in step 2.

After your AWS account has been linked, you will be able to select the VPC and subnet of your choice for the SDDC destination.

The final step is to choose the management network range for the Management Virtual Machines that will be deployed into the SDDC. If you do not specify a CIDR, a default of 10.2.0.0/16 will be used. The main consideration here is that there is no network range overlap between your on-premises, VMware Cloud on AWS, and VPC subnets.
